Department Description

The Communication and Network Systems Department provides Sandia/California with communication services, including computer networks, telephone services, and remote-access capabilities. We provide high-speed communications to most locations on-site by maintaining three computer networks that integrate the latest technology with an extensive fiber-optic infrastructure. Our department oversees all site telephone systems; we also coordinate cellular service and pagers for the California site. Our department is responsible for all phases of operations, including design, implementation, and customer service. We emphasize innovation and teamwork, and we seek to provide the site with reliable services while minimizing costs.

Job Description

Sandia National Laboratories is seeking a network engineer with a strong technical background. The successful candidate, who will design, install, and operate network systems and services for the California site, must emphasize network security, performance, and reliability while supporting a diverse user community. Responsibilities will include system design, network configuration, project management, network modeling and simulation, network security, software development for network applications, troubleshooting, interfacing with cybersecurity and desktop support, and coordinating operations with Sandia/New Mexico. The successful candidate will take a lead role in planning system evolution, developing new capabilities, and reengineering existing systems and processes. The network engineer will also be able to take advantage of the wide range of opportunities that our department provides for growth and career development in the expanding communications field.

Requirements

Qualifications

This position requires a master’s degree (or equivalent experience) in computer science or information systems. Candidates must have excellent written- and verbal-communications skills and must be dedicated and committed to the network operations team. Other required qualifications include experience in the following areas: (1) network systems, (2) boundary controllers (e.g., firewalls & VPN controllers), (3) Cisco routers (e.g., router configuration, IOS, routing protocols), and (4) network applications (e.g., DNS, e-mail, and NTP). Candidates must also have an operating knowledge of TCP/IP network protocols and experience with the following operating-system platforms: UNIX (e.g., LINUX, FreeBSD) and Windows servers.

 

Desired qualifications include (1) demonstrated project management skills and (2) knowledge of cybersecurity technologies and tools.

 

Candidate must be able to obtain a U.S. Department of Energy security clearance for this position. To obtain a security clearance, U.S. citizenship is required.
